The most basic characteristics of stainless steel are its rust resistance under atmospheric conditions and its corrosion resistance in various liquid media. This characteristic is directly related to the content of chromium in the steel. The existence of chromium causes an invisible film on the surface of the steel, which can prevent oxidation and make the material "passivated" or anti-corrosion. The addition of other elements such as nickel or molybdenum can improve the corrosion resistance, strength and temperature resistance.
The corrosion resistance increases with the increase of chromium content. When the content of chromium reaches more than 10.5%, this characteristic of steel will change suddenly, from easy to rust to non rust, from non corrosion to corrosion resistance. Moreover, with the increasing of chromium content from 10.5%, its rust resistance and corrosion resistance have been improved. The maximum chromium content of general stainless steel is 26%, and higher chromium content is unnecessary.
